What makes the Gold Coast unique is its development in a challenging but worthwhile geographical position. Nestled between what is arguably the largest caldera in the Southern hemisphere, the Hinterland, and golden beaches facing the Pacific Ocean, forced the development of a linear city.
With the reputation of an international playground few visitors realize that the city is decentralized, made up of a conglomerate of economic nodes that deliver diverse business opportunities. Consequently there are currently 11 Chambers of Commerce representing the business interests within these city precincts. This presented both a challenge and a benefit in addressing whole of city issues.
The challenge was met by forming and eventually incorporating the Gold Coast Combined Chamber of Commerce Inc. (GCCCC). The benefit is that the 11 Chambers that make up the GCCCC delivers over 2000 grass root members giving the Combined Chamber a strong and credible voice when representing the city’s business community.
The prime directive of the GCCCC is to foster and enact policy that supports or creates an environment in which business can thrive.
To achieve or maintain that environment requires broad policy that touches on a range of issues that include adherence to the triple bottom line in securing balance between economic, social and environmental impact.
This has led to the GCCCC partnering in various boards, forums, committees and task forces that deal with government, tourism, education, construction, public transport, policing and many others that will broaden the city’s economic base and create employment which translates to customers.
In recognizing that business creates the economy and that government controls it, a relationship with the 3 levels of government in achieving understanding of business needs and the impact of regulation on business is paramount. While the GCCCC with its bipartisan approach seeks consultation rather than confrontation in its dealings with government its prime directive takes precedence.
The GCCCC meets monthly or at a time deemed necessary to deal with a specific issue. It has proven to be an effective peer organisation in representing the business community considering its limited capital resources. To further advance its cause in achieving its prime directive the GCCCC is continually seeking funding and sponsorship.
